A few surprises in week one of the 2011 AHSAA playoffs (scroll down for round two playoff brackets)

By KURT DURYEA

Six reigning state champions remain on their thrones after round one of the 2011 AHSAA football playoffs. Leeds, the defending Class 3A state champion, was the only one of the six champions to encounter resistance. The Green Wave rallied late in the fourth quarter to edge Abbeville 28-27.

Class 1A defending champ Sweet Water (8-3) hammered unranked Keith 48-26. The only top-ten team to lose was No. 9 Addison (9-2). The Bulldogs drew a difficult first round matchup with third-seed Berry (10-1). Berry’s high powered offense rang up 54 points to grab an opening round win. Only two teams remain in the 1A ranks with unblemished records. Second-ranked Maplesville (11-0) shut out McIntosh 47-0, while third-ranked Ragland (11-0) beat Gaylesville 46-8.

Leroy secured an easy first-round victory, as they attempt to repeat as Class 2A titlist under new head coach Johnny Wright. Danny Powell, who led the Bears to four titles in the last five years, is now at Class 4A Jackson. Class 2A saw two top-ten teams fall. Fultondale (9-2) rallied from a two-touchdown halftime deficit to best North Sand Mountain 26-21. Seventh-ranked G.W. Long (9-2) came up six yards short of the goal line late in the fourth quarter against the Goshen Eagles (7-4). The defensive stand gave the unheralded Eagles a 33-28 win and a ticket to round two. The top three teams in class 2A remain unbeaten: No. 1 Elba No. 2 Fyffe and No. 3 Tanner.

Class 3A saw three elite teams fall in first round upsets. No. 4 Hanceville was sent packing by Elkmont 28-13. No. 9 Sardis (9-2) was removed by Saks 34-14. Last year’s runner-up and current No. 10 Hamilton (8-3) was dropped by Rogers, 35-21. The top three teams in Class 3A, Piedmont, Handley and Bayside Academy, continue with perfect 11-0 records.

Class 4A will send three unbeaten teams into action on Friday night. Defending champion Thomasville (10-1) will attempt to knock off one of those teams when they welcome Dadeville. Jackson and North Jackson are the other two no-loss teams. No. 9 Guntersville and No. 10 Brooks were losers in round one. The Wildcats were steamrolled by Oneonta 42-7, while Dora defeated Brooks 34-14.

Fairfield was the only top-ten team to drop a first-round game in Class 5A, losing to defending state champion Spanish Fort (8-3). A quarterfinal match with undefeated Greenville (11-0) is a possibility for the 2010 champion Toros. No. 1 Hueytown and Hartselle continue as the only other teams without losses.

The Daphne Trojans rounded out the list of defending state champions that posted first-round victories. A stiff round-two challenge awaits the Trojans when they trek to Prattville to meet the sixth-ranked Lions. Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa and Mountain Brook are the only two 6A teams left in the field without a loss.

Each classification has been reduced to 16 teams. The field will be halved each week with the Super 6 State Championships set for Dec.1-2 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, on the campus of the University of Alabama.
