ASWA week two poll released; Cedar Bluff remains at No. 8

By KURT DURYEA

The Alabama Sports Writers Association released week two of the AHSAA football poll this morning. There were no major movements among the state’s elite teams.

In Class 1A, Collinsville (2-0, 1-0) remained at No. 6 as they dispatched a resilient Spring Garden squad 41-25.  The Cedar Bluff Tigers (1-1, 1-0) took sole possession of the eighth spot as they demolished Woodville 53-8.  Collinsville will host Gaston (1-1, 1-0) Friday night in a 1A Region 7 match, while the Bluff travels to tangle with Class 3A Sardis (2-0).

The Fyffe Red Devils (2-0) retained the No. 3 ranking in Class 2A despite being challenged by Region 6 opponent North Sand Mountain (1-1). Fyffe won the game, 13-10.

In Class 3A, Piedmont (2-0) was unmoved in the No. 2 spot behind Leeds. Piedmont had no trouble with Susan Moore (0-2) at the big house party when they rolled out their new carpet and supersized video screen. The Bulldogs danced to an easy 40-14 win. This week the Bulldogs travel to White Plains.

Cherokee County’s (1-1, 0-1) loss was Fairview’s gain in Class 4A. Fairview was in front, 28-21, as the clock expired with Warriors knocking on Aggies’ door at the 8-yard line. Fairview moved to No. 9 while the voters released the Warriors from Class 4A consideration. This week, Cherokee County will attempt to rebound against the Crossville Lions (0-2, 0-1) on Bobby Joe Johnson Field.

Fort Payne (1-1, 0-1) entered the Class 5A top ten last week only to be bounced out after a 21-14 loss to region rival Etowah.  Etowah (2-0) is off to their best start since they won the 5A state championship in 1999. The Wildcats welcome Arab (1-1, 0-1) Friday night.

Gadsden City (1-1, 0-1) still remains in consideration in Class 6A after a one-point overtime loss to Oxford.  Gadsden City fans hope that the change to the spread offense takes hold this week when they’ll finally be able to see their team in the friendly confines of Titans Stadium. The Mounties of Shades Valley will make the expedition to Gadsden in search of their first win of the season.
