ASWA POLL: Three area teams remain in Class 1A poll

By KURT DURYEA

Three area teams remain in the Class 1A top 10. Cedar Bluff (6-0) held at No. 6 with a solid 26-14 victory over previously No. 8 Collinsville. With the loss, Collinsville (5-1) slipped two spots in the new poll to No. 10. Spring Garden (6-0) crushed Woodville 48-14 and gained a spot in this week’s poll, to No. 9.  The 1A prep state spotlight will shine on Collinsville Friday night as Spring Garden comes to town. Meanwhile, Cedar Bluff welcomes Donoho (4-2) to L.D. Bruce Field.

Piedmont (6-0) garnered all but three first place votes and retained their hold on the Class 3A, No. 1 position. The Bulldogs recorded their third shutout in a row with a 34-0 whitewashing of White Plains.    Piedmont ranks No. 11 among all Alabama high schools with an average of 6.8 points allowed per game this season. The Bulldogs are on the road at Susan Moore (3-3) Friday, and return to the Field of Champions the following week to host Saks (5-1).

Fort Payne’s (6-0) road win over previously unbeaten Boaz boosted the Wildcats to No. 4 in Class 5A. If Fort Payne runs the regular season table it would mark the fourth time since 2006 that the Wildcats have recorded a 10-0 regular season mark. In 2007 the Fort Payne achieved a final ranking of No.3. In 2006, the ASWA pollsters had the Cats at No. 2 at year’s end. Fort Payne entertains Columbia Friday night.

Gadsden City’s 21-19 loss to unranked Pell City dropped them from the top 10 in Class 6A, and marked the second loss in a row for the Titans. Gadsden City (4-2) will load the buses for a Friday night trip to 6A, No. 2 Clay-Chalkville (6-0).

In games involving area teams Friday night, Gaylesville (2-4) looks for their third win in a row at Woodville (0-6). Sand Rock (3-3) looks for a key Region 7 win over Westbrook Christian (4-2). Class 4A, Region 5 has Cherokee County (0-6) at Anniston (3-3). Gaston hosts 2A, No. 3 Fyffe.
