ASWA weekly poll; Playoff picture clears slightly

By KURT DURYEA

Piedmont (8-0, 7-0) used a late rally to defeat Saks 33-21.  In the process the Bulldogs remained undefeated, captured the region championship and maintained their No. 1 ranking in Class 3A.

Piedmont’s Chris Strott was recognized by the ASWA for his efforts in the win. Strott completed 11-of-21 passes for 189 yards, with a 20-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion. The senior also rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Piedmont closes region play at home Friday against Ashville (3-5, 2-5).

Collinsville (8-0, 5-0) rolled over Decatur Heritage Christian 49-15 and remains at No. 4 in Class 1A. The Panthers, who have clinched their second straight Region 7 title, finish their region schedule at home this week against Valley Head (3-5, 1-4).

The Fyffe Red Devils (8-0, 7-0) will make a trip to Sand Rock this week carrying the No. 2 rank in Class 2A.  The Wildcats (5-3, 5-2) are locked into the playoffs, but a Wildcat upset, coupled with a Pleasant Valley victory over Ider, would advance Sand Rock to the third spot in Region 6North Sand Mountain, the two seed, remained at No. 6 in this week’s poll.

Class 4A had a slight hiccup that allowed Fairview, from Region 7, to re-enter the top ten at No. 10.  North Jackson and Guntersville held their ground at No.4 and No. 9, respectively. Fairview hosts North Jackson in a game that will determine the Region 7 championship, and Guntersville travels to Cherokee County. Top-ranked Thomasville and No. 2 Jackson cruised to victories to set up the showdown between the undefeated Region 1 rivals Friday in Jackson. Another title is on the line in Region 3 where No. 3 Dadeville is at No. 8 Beauregard.

Fort Payne (6-1, 4-1) didn’t budge from the sixth spot in Class 5A. The Wildcats host Scottsboro this week. The Wildcats have secured a home playoff game, as they will be no worse than the two seed. The Wildcats are tied with Etowah, but the Blue Devils hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Wildcats need a win coupled with an Etowah loss to Boaz to grab the number one seed.

There were no changes in the top positions of other classes as 6A No. 1 Daphne was unchallenged by Fairhope 45-21. Class 5A Hueytown trounced John Carroll Catholic 57-15. In class 2A, Elba crushed New Brockton 63-14. Lynn pounded Brilliant 70-14 in Class 1A.

Unranked Gadsden City is at home against Hewitt-Trussville and will try to secure the four seed in Class 6A Region 7.  The winner of that game will draw the victor of Friday night’s marquee matchup between No. 2 Hoover and No. 4 Mountain Brook.
