Warriors drop to No. 9 in Class 4A poll after loss

By Kurt Duryea

Cedar Bluff (1-1, 1-0) could not break in to the top ten in the Alabama Sports Writers Association weekly high school football poll last week, as there were no losses among the Class 1A elites.  The Tigers showcased an impressive offensive array, cruising past Woodville 41-6.

Gaylesville (1-1, 1-0) also garnered attention – but no votes – as they galloped past the Gaston Bulldogs, 34-12.

Collinsville (2-0, 1-0) has received votes in Class 1A and, like Cedar Bluff, needs the big boys to stumble in order to break into the top tier.  The Panthers travel to Gaston Friday night.

Cherokee County (1-1, 0-1) slipped to a tie at No. 9 in the Class 4A poll after falling to the Fairview Aggies, 36-22.  This week, the Warriors travel to take on another new region rival in the Crossville Lions (1-1, 0-1). North Jackson remained at No. 3 behind Jackson and Thomasville and one step in front of UMS-Wright.

Undefeated Piedmont delivered a dramatic come-from-behind win Friday night, scoring on the last play of the game to top Susan Moore 26-23 in a pivotal Class 3A Region 6 contest. The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs welcome White Plains to the Field of Champions Friday night.

Leeds is still the No. 1 team in 3A, with Saks (2-0, 2-0) in the No. 9 slot.  Glencoe received votes, but hasn’t broken into the top ten. The Yellow Jackets take a break from region play Friday night when they take on the Class 2A Sand Rock Wildcats (1-1, 0-1).

A marquee matchup in Class 2A will take place in Rainbow City Friday night when the No. 3 Ider Hornets (2-0, 1-0) face No. 6 Westbrook Christian.  Meanwhile, the No. 8-ranked Fyffe Red Devils play winless Victory Christian.

In Class 6A, Prattville took a tumble from the No. 2 position to No. 5 following Friday’s 35-34 loss to Stanhope Elmore. Prattville’s drop opened the door for undefeated Gadsden City to climb up one rung to No. 4. The Titans grabbed a region win over Oxford, 24-12.

The Fort Payne Wildcats (2-0, 1-0) still are outside of the top ten in Class 5A, but gained a measure of respect with a 38-0 drubbing of Etowah.  The Wildcats travel to Arab Friday to take on the undefeated Arabian Knights.
