Warriors win in week 3, but drop to tenth in 4A

By Kurt Duryea

Cherokee County (2-1, 1-1) picked up a region win over Crossville Friday night, 22-7, but the Warriors dropped to a spot to tenth in the Class 4A rankings. Cherokee County meets Butler at Warrior Stadium Friday for homecoming.

There will some high-impact games in Class 4A this week, as No. 3 North Jackson battles Region 7 rival Guntersville (2-1, 2-0). Another featured match will be No. 4 UMS-Wright at undefeated and No. 1-ranked Jackson.

Undefeated Piedmont did not need a dramatic come-from-behind win last Friday, as they dispatched White Plains 41-21. At No. 3 in the Class 3A poll, the Bulldogs should continue their hot start against winless J.B. Pennington this week.

Leeds (3-0) is still the top-ranked team in 3A and must face upset-minded Walter Wellborn (3-0) this week.  Saks vacated the number nine slot and Glencoe (3-0, 2-0) seized the opportunity to move in at No. 10. The Yellow Jackets are now staring down a three-week stretch that contains Weaver, Piedmont and Saks.

Westbrook Christian (3-0, 3-0) is making believers out of the Class 2A pack, most previously by dominating previously No. 3-ranked Ider, 35-7. Now ranked fourth, the Warriors have two wins against top opponents.  Westbrook will journey to Sand Rock on Friday.

Loachapoka’s loss allowed one team into the Class 1A top-tier. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the Cedar Bluff Tigers (2-1, 2-0) or Collinsville Panthers (3-0, 2-0).  Both teams posted convincing wins, but will have to march in place for now.

Gaylesville (2-1, 2-0) is still looking for votes and remains off the radar screen. This week the Trojans travel to Skyline. Cedar Bluff faces Valley Head and Collinsville travels to winless Woodville.

In 6A Gadsden (3-0, 2-0) stood pat at No. 4 this week after blasting Shades Valley, 42-14.  The Titans will tangle with Huffman Friday night as they tune up for their showdown on the road with top-ranked Hoover on Sept. 24.

Three top ten teams lost in Class 5A. Even with those losses, the Fort Payne Wildcats (3-0, 2-0) couldn’t make their way onto the list. Last week, the potent Fort Payne offense and stingy defense gave previously unbeaten Arab a 45-14 pasting. Fort Payne welcomes Southside (2-1) this week.
