Warriors still tenth in 4A; Piedmont holds at No. 3

By Kurt Duryea

Cherokee County (3-1, 2-1) picked up a 63-52 region win over Butler last week, allowing the Warriors to hold steady at No. 10 in the Class 4A rankings football rankings released today by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

In Class 3A, undefeated Piedmont is off to their best start since 1992 after hammering J.B. Pennington 48-13 last Friday. Ranked third, the Bulldogs have a bull’s eye on their back this week, as they host the undefeated No.8-ranked Glencoe Yellow Jackets.

Also last week, Westbrook Christian (4-0) defeated Sand Rock 18-0 to remain fourth in the Class 2A poll. The Wildcats’ fellow Region 6 members, Ider and Fyffe, also won last week and maintain the seventh and nine spots, respectively.

In Class 1A unranked Cedar Bluff (3-1, 3-0) and Collinsville (4-0) continue to tread water as they wait for a spot to open up in the poll. Gaylesville (3-1, 3-0) did not get a chance to showcase their powerful rushing attack last week, as they picked up a forfeit from Skyline.

This week Gaylesville is at Ragland, and Cedar Bluff travels to Douglas. Collinsville welcomes Jefferson Christian tomorrow night.

In 6A Gadsden (4-0) stood pat at No. 4 despite struggling in a 24-13 win over Huffman. The Titans will have upset on their minds when they face the top-ranked Hoover, whose defense has not allowed a single point all season. Pre-season No. 2 Prattville lost its second game of the season last week and exited the top ten.

Two weeks ago, three ranked teams in Class 5A suffered losses. Last week three more teams fell. Even with those losses, Fort Payne (4-0) couldn’t break into the top ten. The Wildcats set their sights on the Cullman Bearcats (3-1) in a non-region affair this Friday.
