21st Century Camp coming to Gadsden State in July

STAFF REPORTS

Gadsden State Community College will host the sixth annual 21st Century Camp July 15-20.

This free camp will give participants fun, exciting opportunities to develop character and leadership skills through hands-on challenges, team-building games, and personal experience.

Students will spend six days and five nights preparing to give back to their communities throughout the upcoming year. All activities are designed to prepare participants for tutoring with the 21st Century programs. The camp is funded by a grant from the State Department of Education in cooperation with Auburn University.

Arledge Center Director Pam Clough said that the focus of the camp will be connecting with the community by practicing the 4 R’s “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, and Respect”. Participants will visit the Alabama Power Steam Plant, Gadsden Water Treatment Plant, Noccalula Falls and Terrapin Creek, where they will paddle downstream and collect environmental samples. Students will also tour the Southern Environmental Center at Birmingham Southern College
Each participant will be asked to serve at least 40 volunteer hours over the next year in one of the 21st Century programs within the local school system.

Participants should be from the state of Alabama. There will be a total of 30 participants. The camp is free, but a $15 pre-registration fee is required. All registration packets must be returned by June 15.
