Candidate Profile: John A. Roberts

STAFF REPORTS — John A. Roberts has qualified as a candidate for re-election for the office of Cherokee County revenue commissioner.

Roberts, a life-long resident of Cherokee County, is a graduate of Cherokee County High School, Alabama Technical College and the University of Alabama Law Enforcement Academy. He is the son of the late Elbert (Goat) Roberts and Hazel Stinson Roberts. In September 1994, Roberts was appointed by Gov. Jim Folsom, Jr. to fill the unexpired term of Mrs. Dot Miller upon her retirement. He was elected in 1996 and re-elected in 2002.

Prior to serving as revenue commissioner, Roberts was a 21-year employee of the Alabama Forestry Commission, serving as a forest ranger for Cherokee County. During that time he learned Cherokee County and a great number of its residents while gaining considerable knowledge and experience in mapping, surveying, application of deeds, employee supervision and general governmental business.

He is married to Denise Clanton Roberts and they have a daughter, Andrea, and a son, Jonathan. They are members of Centre First United Methodist Church.

Roberts is an active member of the Cherokee County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments and Chairman of the Cherokee County Communications District Board of Directors. He is also active in other civic organizations, including the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, Spirit of Cherokee, Cherokee County Red Cross Board, Centre Rotary Club, Weiss Lake Improvement Association and Cherokee County Cattleman's Association.

“Public service is nothing new to me,” Roberts told The Post. “I have worked my entire adult life in public service in Cherokee County. It is an honor and a privilege to be your revenue commissioner, and I humbly ask for your vote and support to re-elect me. Your help will be greatly appreciated.”
