Candidate Profile: Lanny Starr

STAFF REPORTS — Former Real Pit Barbecue owner Lanny Starr has announced he will try to unseat Dist. 3 Cherokee County Commissioner Elbert St. Clair in the June 3 Democratic primary.

Starr said he is excited about his first run for public office.

"I have actively been serving this great county for many years and I look forward to chance to be the next commissioner for Dist. 3," he told The Post. "I believe I can make a difference in Cherokee County and I want to be able to enhance the quality of life for all residents."

Starr said, if elected, he will concentrate on several specific areas that of the county that can be improved.

"Economic opportunities, expanding and improving roads, providing quality public safety, supporting schools, improving the county's infrastructure and helping the youth and elderly" can all be made even better, he said. "I will look 'outside the box' for innovative ideas and issues to move our county into the future."

In 2001 Starr, 57, retired from Goodyear in Gadsden after 30 years. He owned and operated Real Pit Barbecue in Centre from 1990 to 2006. Starr is a life-long resident of the Howell's Crossroads community. He graduated from Hatcher High School in 1968.
