Candidate Profile: Harrell Whitener

STAFF REPORTS — Retired Gaylesville businessman Harrell Whitener has announced his candidacy for the position of Cherokee County revenue commissioner. He will face incumbent John A. Roberts and Bobby Borders in the June 3 Democratic primary election.

Whitener, who has a bachelor's degree in business administration, is the founder and president of Friends for Life, Inc. -- also known as the Animal Zone -- a non-profit organization. He founded Friends for Life in 1989.

Whitener said he regularly attends county commission meetings and feels the county's current tax and revenue program is not current with economic conditions.

"We need to reprogram, reevaluate, and scale back revenues to reflect present values for businesses and individuals," Whitener told The Post. "We all need to do our part to tighten our belts to help relieve the stress on our citizens, financially, due to our economic crises. We need it now."

Whitener said he feels more qualified than other candidates who do not attend county meetings.

"As usual there are those who wish to be elected, yet most are not up on current events and have no idea how the office they seek is operated," he said. "Think before you vote and act responsibly."
