By Maci Hughes

CEDAR BLUFF — Tuesday, Oct. 6 marked a new beginning for Cedar Bluff High School. The school began one of the first the nation to participate in the Rally Against Childhood Cancer to benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital.

St. Jude Children's Hospital is a non-profit organization that works to provide necessary treatment for children at no cost for the children's families. St. Jude also conducts research to discover new treatment options and eventually find cures.

The Tiger Rally Against Childhood Cancer involves each participant sending 25 letters asking community members to contribute a small donation to St. Jude Children's Hospital. All donations will be used to fund cancer research and provide treatments for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. All donations are tax-deductible.

The school is also holding a “Coin War” between homerooms. Coin jars have been placed in each of the homerooms in grades 6-12 and students are encouraged to place their spare change in the coin jars. The homerooms that raise the most money will be declared the winners. Two homeroom winners, one from grades six through eight and one from grades nine through twelve will be chosen receive a pizza and movie party during school hours. The competition continues through Friday.

The Cedar Bluff High School Math and Science Club is sponsoring the Tiger Rally Against Childhood Cancer. Jan Miller and Paige Bishop are faculty sponsors. Club president Maci Hughes initiated the fundraiser with the help of St. Jude representative Megan Emmert. Vice-president Casey Murdock says she expects the fundraiser to go “extremely well.” Secretary Kai Wen, treasurer Jake McElwee, and reporter Nick Reed also have high expectations for the event.

The Tigers have set a fundraising goal of $5,000. Anyone who would like to help the club achieve their goal can call Jan Miller or Paige Bishop at 256-779-6211 or email Hughes at mhughes2010@hotmail.com.
