Cedar Bluff Council meets, hears reports

STAFF REPORTS

CEDAR BLUFF — The Cedar Bluff Town Council addressed several matters of interest at its May 23 meeting.

Following the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, the council members approved the minutes of the previous meeting, then heard the monthly report from the police department. Details included one citation, one warning, eight arrests and 49 reports taken.

Shane Woodham, chief of the volunteer fire department, reported one building fire, two brush fires, six medical assists, one car accident and three severe weather-related calls over the past month. Woodham also thanked everyone for the support the department received during its recent fund-raising efforts.

Mayor Ethel Sprouse and the council members then discussed Liberty Day planning. The annual all-day event, set for July 2 this year, is expected to cost just under $20,000, Sprouse reported. She added that she anticipates most of the costs will be covered by booth rental fees, donations from businesses and individuals, and state and county funding. Sprouse also told the Council a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Weiss Lake is to be a part of the program this year and that some funding from Alabama Power is expected.

In response to a letter from a town resident that was read at the meeting, Sprouse asked for a motion to spend $450 on anti-littering signs and radio ads. The motion was made by Norman Burton and seconded by Lenora McWhorter before passing unanimously.

Mayor Sprouse also asked the Council to recognize the Cedar Bluff High School track team by spending money to erect a sign near the campus. The boys and girls teams have both won Class 1A state track titles for five years in a row. The vote in favor was unanimous.

The Council passed several other spending measures, including a unanimous vote to increase the salary of Assistant Town Clerk Misty Ferguson hourly pay by 50 cents to $10.50 an hour.
