Four CCHS players named to All-Region team

By KURT DURYEA

The eight head coaches from Class 4A, Region 7 honored four Cherokee County players as part of the All-Region team.

Seniors Patrick Lowe (LB) and Michael Burleson (DB) were chosen along with junior tight end Logan Pierce and running back Ty Green.

Green received recognition for his 676 yards rushing on 99 carries. Green also hauled in 22 passes for an additional 304 yards.  The sophomore tailback tallied six rushing and two receiving touchdowns in 2011.

Pierce’s recognition from the coaches actually resulted from his play on the offensive line in the tight end position. Pierce was utilized much of the year to block for Green and D.J. McAllister.  The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior was also called up to provide pocket protection for junior quarterback Tanner Young.  Pierce made four catches on the season for 74 yards.

Lowe was asked to move to the outside linebacker position early in the season and adapted well to the new duties.  The senior finished the year with 71 tackles and a sack.  Lowe and Burleson were starters on the 2009 undefeated 4A State Championship Team.  Lowe was the 2010 Cherokee County Defensive Player of the Year.

Burleson closed out his senior campaign with five interceptions to pick up the all-region nod in the defensive backfield.  Burleson pulled double duty as a Warrior receiver.  The talented wideout led the area in receptions with 43.  Burleson totaled 549 yards and five touchdowns.

Leading the way with eight selections was region champion North Jackson. Guntersville and Fairview, which finished second and third, respectively, both had seven.  Douglas had four selections while Butler and DAR both had one.

North Jackson's Kahne Cooper was selected the overall MVP. Luke Bailey of Fairview was the offensive MVP, while North Jackson's Dwight McGowan was the defensive MVP.  North Jackson's Shawn Peek was the Coach of the Year.

The all-region offense included quarterback Clayton Daniel (Guntersville); linemen Joe Evans (Douglas), Micah Chambers (Fairview), Ben Cox (Guntersville), Marquez Nicholoson (North Jackson), Logan Pierce (Cherokee County) and Jake Roberts (Fairview); wide receivers Nick McAnally (Guntersville), Daquan Lawrence (North Jackson), Tyler King and Spencer Boyd (Fairview), and Luke Morgan (Douglas); running backs Ty Green (Cherokee County), Dillon Lawrence (Douglas) and Rodriquke Faulks (Guntersville); and athlete Justin Pride (Butler).

The all-region defense included linemen Sam Cox (Guntersville), Nichols Pope and Chase Lacey (North Jackson), Forrest Sears (Fairview) and Nick Fountain (DAR); linebackers Patrick Lowe (Cherokee County), Kanzaz Bailey (Fairview), Hamilton Burden (Guntersville), David Segers (Crossville) and Brody Daniel (Douglas); and defensive backs Austin Blevis (North Jackson) and Michael Burleson (Cherokee County).

The all-region placekicker was Caesar Diaz of North Jackson. Hunter Kennamer, of Guntersville, was the punter.

Cherokee County finished region play at 4-3.  With their fourth-place region finish the Warriors made the playoffs for the seventh time in the last eight years.

Next year the Warriors will operate out of 4A region 5.  The AHSAA reclassification has brought a new look to the region albeit with some familiar foes.  Without a doubt, the Warriors will be in the thick of the battle against Alexandria, Anniston, Cleburne, Hokes Bluff, Lincoln, Jacksonville and Munford.
