CENTRE — City officials day began the call for applications from residents willing to serve three-year terms on Centre's new Alcohol License Review Committee.

Three applicants will be appointed by the City Council to serve alongside the city clerk, fire chief, chief of police and mayor.

"The clerk, fire chief and police chief, and mayor can also appoint a designated representative to serve for them," Councilman Harry Moon told The Post Friday.

Moon also provided The Post with a copy of Section 18 of the city's proposed ordinance, which Moon said runs about 20 pages in its current form.

Moon said the ordinance still requires a few changes and alterations that have to be made by city attorney Al Shumaker before the Council can vote to accept or decline it.

As it stands, Section 18 of the proposed document, which details the responsibilities of the Alcohol License Review Committee, lays out its makeup, then details its responsibilities regarding enforcement.

For example, the ordinance says the Committee will review license applications and then submit written recommendations to the City Council "concerning the approval or disapproval of the application."

Section 18 also gives the Alcohol Committee the power to review complaints "or initiate its own inquiry" into possible violations at an "establishment licensed by the city to conduct routine business in the sell [sic] of alcoholic beverages."

The section also gives the Alcohol Committee authority to require licensees to produce records for review "as related to operation ... of the licensed establishment."

Moon said the language in Section 18 is an amalgam of wording from alcohol ordinances from other cities and towns across Alabama, and is fairly standard.

According to a classified listing placed in the employment section of this edition of The Post, applicants for one of three open positions on the Alcohol License Review Committee must live inside the Centre city limits and be willing to serve for no pay.

Resumes can be mailed to the city clerk's office at 401 East Main Street in Centre through Jan. 21.
