Centre Council to vote on alcohol sales again on Sept. 14

STAFF REPORTS

CENTRE — The Centre City Council failed in its first attempt to pass a liquor referendum last week.

The vote, which came after the required number of registered voters signed a petition requesting the action, was 6-1 in favor of allowing a Nov. 2 vote on allowing alcohol sales inside the city limits.

Councilman Joe Hall was the lone dissenting vote.

"I voted my convictions," Hall said Friday. "I felt like that was the way the people who elected me would have wanted me to vote."

Mayor Tony Wilkie said the Council will again try to pass the ordinance on Sept. 14, when a simple majority — not a unanimous vote — will be required for passage.

"We're simply following state laws and proper legal procedures," Wilkie told The Post on Friday.
