CEDAR BLUFF — Principal Bobby Mintz and Librarian Candice McKinney have been working to organize and enhance Cedar Bluff's High School's online alumni presence. Last week, the first alumni newsletter went out to the list they have already compiled.

McKinney said Mintz has plans to begin sending out the alumni newsletter on a regular basis.

“We're going to begin a quarterly or bi-annual newsletter,” McKinney told The Post. “It may be a while before the next print version comes out, but we are going to begin web page highlights soon.”

The newsletter sent out last week urges alumni to email their current contact information, along with a brief highlight of their lives for the web site, to cmckinney@cherokeek12.org.

The newsletter also announced plans for a trophy case that will highlight the accomplishments of former football coach and longtime principal Leonard D. Bruce. Alumni are encouraged to send donations toward the purchase of the trophy case, which estimates set at $8,000.

“Lynn Bruce, has offered to donate many of his father's pictures, awards, letters to display in the case,” the newsletter reads. “A nameplate thanking those who make a contribution of $100 or more will appear on the case.”

The trophy case honoring Bruce, who compiled a record of 112-51-10 in 19 years as the head coach at Cedar Bluff, will eventually be placed in the lobby of the recently-renovated L.D. Bruce Gymnasium.

Bruce retired as principal in 1986. He passed away in 2000.

McKinney said the school is also looking to add to its archive of the old school building and library, which were built in the 1930s. The two-story classroom building was torn down decades ago; the “old gym” was converted into the school's library and media center in the mid-1980s.
