County coroner Rogers arrested on 18 counts

CENTRE — Cherokee County Coroner Bobby Don Rogers was arrested Nov. 11 after being indicted earlier this week by a local grand jury. 

Rogers, the county coroner, was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, theft of property first degree, and 16 counts of second degree forgery. 

Rogers, who did not run for reelection in last week’s General Election, reportedly turned himself in to local authorities shortly after receiving word of the indictment. Sheriff Jeff Shaver said Rogers has since been released on a $25,000 bond. 

According to Cherokee County District Attorney Mike O'Dell, none of the allegations contained in the indictment are alleged to have involved his work as Cherokee County Coroner. Rogers who also worked at Perry Funeral Home in Centre

Due to his position as coroner, O'Dell stated that the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the charges.

"It should be noted that the indictment, and the allegations contained therein, are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty," O'Dell said.

Broderick Smith was elected as the county's new coroner on Nov. 2. He will be sworn into office in January.
