Warriors' Davis named 4A Player of Year in softball

MONTGOMERY — Players from state championship teams dominated the Alabama Sports Writers Association's All-State softball teams, released Saturday.

Locally, players from Cherokee County, Sand Rock, Cedar Bluff, Spring Garden and Gaylesville were recognized for their achievements during the 2012 season. Cherokee County Warriors pitcher Tori Davis was named Player of the Year in Class 4A.

Of the seven classes in Alabama, 15 players were first-team selections from championship squads, along with the six coaches who guided those teams.
Class 6A champion Sparkman and AISA Class 3A champion Macon-East led the way with three first-team selections each.

In Class 4A champ Haleyville had one selection along with Coach of the Year Kelly Rushing.

Class 3A Pitcher and Player of the Year Taylor West and Coach of the Year Mike Tucker of Saks were named to the team while Class 2A Hatton had two selections, including Pitcher and Player of the Year Hillary Carpenter. Class 1A Ragland received two selections, including Pitcher and Player of the Year Sommar Wright, and Coach of the Year Jonathan Nix.

Among local teams, Cherokee County placed two players on the Class 4A All-State team: Davis, a junior; and sophomore catcher Madison Millsaps. Darbie Rosser received an honorable mention selection.

Sand Rock had three players on the All-State team, all honorable mention selections. They were Megan McCullough (Jr.), Madison Smith (So.) and McKenna Morgan (8th).

Other local players on the Class 1A team included Spring Garden's Jordan Sides; honorable mention selections were Christy Cox of Collinsville (Jr.); eighth-grader Jessica Smart and junior Heather Smart of Spring Garden; Suzie Quarles of Cedar Bluff (Sr.); Katlin Hammett of Gaylesville (Sr.) and sophomore Katie McGinnis of Cedar Bluff.
