Garden wallops Woodville, 48-14, runs record to 6-0

By ROY MITCHELL

Spring Garden ran its record to 6-0, the best start in school history, in a 48-14 rout of visiting Woodville Friday night. In the end, it was the visitor's inability to stop the Spring Garden offense that put this game out of reach soon after it started.

On this night Spring Garden could have been called the Pink Panthers. The entire team wore pink socks. Cheerleaders sported pink streaks under their eyes, and pink shoelaces. The effort was for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It wasn't just the players who showed their support. Over $350 was collected in the stands to benefit the cause.

The home side fans would be rewarded early for their generosity.

On Spring Garden's first play from scrimmage junior tailback Tyler Morgan scampered 74 yards around left end for a touchdown. The home Panthers led the visiting Panthers 7-0 moments into the game.

Woodville answered quickly, as junior Austin Morrison pulled down a 33-yard pass over the middle to bring Woodville to within one. They trailed 7-6 after the seven-play, 55-yard drive.

One play into the next drive, Spring Garden scored again. This time it was senior back Forrest Livingston who bullied 49 yards for the touchdown. Livingston, one of the area's most highly-touted running backs, nursed an injury and only had three carries. Spring Garden led 14-6.

With 3:51 remaining in the first quarter, senior Craig Jones darted three yards up the middle to widen the Spring Garden lead to 21-6.

After senior Josh Hale's interception, Spring Garden was on the march again. Six plays and 60 yards later, junior quarterback Will Ivey's fourth down, 31-yard scramble notched another score. By the end of the first, Spring Garden led 28-6.

In the second quarter, Spring Garden scored on touchdown runs by Morgan and senior Dylan Watson of six and three yards, respectively. At the half, Spring Garden led 42-6.

Undefeated and ranked No. 10 in Class 1A, Spring Garden coach Jason Howard detailed how he minimized distractions preparing for an 0-5 Woodville team.

“It was hard. We have 10 seniors, and I met with them going into this week,” Howard said. “I told them how they need to keep their focus and they did a pretty good job.”

The second half saw mostly Spring Garden reserves on the field. Even so, the Panthers scored on their first possession of the half. Senior Will Penton capped a 10-play, 71-yard drive with a three-yard run. The score stood 48-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Woodville still had some steam left in the engine. Senior Brandon Bingham broke through the line on the next possession. His 59-yard score capped an 80-yard drive.

Spring Garden's Tyler Morgan led all rushers with 172 yards—all in the first half.

Woodville (0-6, 0-5) hosts Gaylesville next week. Spring Garden (6-0, 5-0) enters the toughest part of its schedule, beginning with Collinsville this Friday.
