Cherokee Co. Country Club to host annual event May 28-29

CENTRE — The Cherokee County Country Club's annual Two-Person Scramble is set to take place May 28-29. Club manager Steve Baker said he expects a full field to compete in the regional tournament event which features cash prizes for flight winners.

In the past the popular event has drawn participants from Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, as well as Alabama, to the quaint golf layout just off Highway 9.

The field is open to all. Women will play from the forward red tees and men 65-and-over will tee off from the gold tees. All others will play from the standard white tee box.

While the Cherokee design plays at 5,491 yards from the white tees, players can't overpower the course. Errant drives often lead to extra strokes on the sloping fairways. In addition, the four par threes yield few legitimate birdie attempts. The par fives — one on the front and two on the back — present scoring opportunities for golfers finding the fairway.

Baker said the course is in excellent shape.

“We've already had three or four tournaments this year,” he said. “The course staff, along with volunteers, has worked incredibly hard to keep improving our course. It is playing great right now."

He added: "If people just come out and see this course they will be amazed at what we have done.”
