Annual "Iron Ball" golf tournament is Saturday

STAFF REPORTS

CENTRE — The Alabama versus Auburn four-person scramble “Iron Ball” Scholarship Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 18. The annual event will take place at the Cherokee County Country Club on Highway 9 in Centre. The event is organized and directed by local alumni clubs. Proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for local students headed to both campuses.

To spice up the event this year, two 26-inch TV sets will be given away at the end of the event. In addition, skill prizes will be awarded for the longest drives for men, senior men, junior men and women as well as closest-to- the-pin shots on holes 5, 8, 12 and 17.

Seniors (65 and up) and juniors (13 and under) will have the benefit of teeing it up from the gold tees, while all women begin from the red tee markers. Men (14-64) will play the white tees. The field is limited to the first 18 paid teams. The prize for winning is $400. A full field of 18 teams will pay to through the top five finishers.

The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a breakfast before the 8 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch will be served after the tournament, just before awards and prizes are presented.

University of Alabama Alumni Association President Pam Gossett said the tournament allowed her association to present a $2,500 scholarship a year ago.

“We hope to be able to do the same again this year, if not even more,” she said. “There are still a few spots for teams available.”

The entry fee is $200 per team. For information call 256-927-2680 or send e-mail to cherokeeclub@tds.net
