Country club golf course on the mend

Staff Reports

CENTRE — Many local readers who are golfers may already know that the Cherokee County Country Club's 18-hole course has not been up to par so far in 2009. Above-average rainfall early in the year, combined with problems resulting from chemicals applied to the greens in April, almost brought golf at the Country Club to a halt.

Course manager Steve Baker said those problems have been mostly corrected.

“The greens are completely healed and Superintendent Shane McElwee and I are getting things ready for tournament play,” Baker told The Post last week.

Baker said the Country Club currently hosts a two-person scramble every month for seniors age 50 and over.

“This month's tournament is set for August 10,” he said. “We'll also have a four-person scramble for seniors on August 17 and a men's invitational tournament on August 22 and 23.”

Baker said a course in Layfayette, Ga. hosts a four-person scramble on the first Monday on every month. Another golf course, Stonebridge in Rome, Ga., holds an identical event on the fourth Monday.

“The popularity of those events is why we are holding the event on the 17th,” Baker said.

Baker said he expects the Aug. 22-23 invitational event to attract golfers from the Calhoun County area. He added that the event is part of the Rome golf tour.

“It's like the Fed Ex tour for PGA players,” Baker said. “They play on several area courses, standings are kept and players look forward to a season-ending tournament.”

Baker said Cherokee County Country Club tournaments usually attract more golfers than any of the others because players can compete for great prizes on a top-notch course.

“Many of the golfers who come to Centre for the first time say the course is the best-kept secret in Cherokee County,” Baker said.
