Gadsden State forced to drop baseball, volleyball, others

STAFF REPORTS

GADSDEN — Gadsden State Community College Interim President William O. Blow last week announced a plan to phase out several existing athletic programs due to funding restraints.

Cross country, tennis, softball and baseball will all be eliminated at Gadsden State by the summer of 2012.

“After careful evaluation of the college’s current financial situation, we are forced to make budgetary decisions that will allow us to maintain our mission of serving students," Dr. Blow said in a press release. "Gadsden State will continue to prioritize student needs by offering quality academic education, workforce development and adult education opportunities that are accessible and affordable.”

Volleyball, along with women’s and men’s basketball, will remain a part of the athletic program. The funding cuts will directly affect approximately 60 students which is less than one percent of the student population.

Gadsden State will continue to honor the scholarship commitments made to current athletes, according to the press release.
