Sports Hall of Fame announces Class of 2010

CENTRE — The 2010 Class of the Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame was announced yesterday. Joining those expected to soon be enshrined on the walls of the new Cherokee Arena are Jack Green, B.T. Law, and Eddy Norris.  

The annual banquet will be held Saturday, July 17 at 6 p.m. at the Gadsden State-Cherokee campus in Centre. The Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class in 2005.

Tickets to this year's dinner and awards ceremony are $20 and may be purchased by calling Tommy Moon at 256-927-3577 or Jo Jo Odam at 256-557-0610.

Green, a former Cherokee County High School football star, played at the University of Alabama in the mid-1940s and was a Second Team All-SEC selection while a member of the Crimson Tide team that won the National Championship in 1945. 

Law, also a CCHS graduate, won several statewide awards while playing football and basketball for the Warriors, the played football at Auburn University. 

Norris, a football and basketball star at Sand Rock High School in the 1980s, won All-County, All-Area, and All-State awards in both sports before taking the court at Snead State Community College and the University of Montevallo. 

Moon told The Post efforts are underway to secure state financing that will pay for a permanent exhibit inside the 2,000-seat Cherokee Arena on the campus of Gadsden State-Cherokee in Centre.

"We need about $3,500 to have enough to do it right," Moon said. "We are in talks with Sen. Larry Means and Rep. Richard Lindsey to get that funding."
