20th annual Liberty Day is Saturday in Cedar Bluff

By SCOTT WRIGHT

CEDAR BLUFF —  An up-and-coming country music star with local ties will headline the entertainment lineup at Cedar Bluff's annual Liberty Day celebration, set for this Saturday.

Wade Trammell, whose parents and grandparents all hail from Cherokee County, will take to the TDS Telecom-sponsored pavilion stage at 7:10 p.m. and play until shortly before the fireworks begin.

Liberty Day, an Independence Day street festival and celebration begun by Mayor Bob Davis and the Town Council 20 years ago, is held every year on the Saturday closest to July 4. This year's event will feature plenty for everyone in between its 9 a.m. kickoff and the sparkle of the first rocket's red glare at 9 p.m. A holiday-themed musical presentation will be simulcast on WEIS 990AM (FM 100.5) during the fireworks show.

As always, a portion of Highway 68 through downtown will be blocked off to traffic on June 30 for the antique car show, and the walkway around the Town Park will be filled with dozens of arts-and-crafts booths and vendors. Entertainment for the kids includes face painting, train rides, puppets, inflatables and water slides, and Bopping Heads, which offers customers the chance to make personalized green-screen videos.

The Cedar Bluff Volunteer Fire Department will be smoking Boston butts and selling barbecue plates at the fire hall. There will also be ice cream, lemonade, funnel cake, and several other food vendors set up throughout the park area.

“We've got several new vendors coming to Liberty Day this year that we are really excited about,” said Assistant Town Clerk and Event Coordinator Misty Mobbs. “And Delmus Brewster has put together another great antique car show for everyone to enjoy.”

There will be a cavalcade of live music all day long beneath the pavilion in the center of the Town Park. Musical acts scheduled to perform include the Sharpes Quartet, Bent in Bama, the Brooke Danielle Band and Jeremiah Wheeler. There will also be cloggers and line dancers performing throughout the day.

Mobbs gave special thanks to the Cedar Bluff Utility Board for becoming a co-sponsor of this year's event. They donated money towards this year's fireworks display, annually hailed as one of the largest in the Southeast. The pyrotechnics will be fired from the usual spot on the town pier, located at the south end of the John L. Burnett Bridge on the Highway 9 causeway.
