Centre native recognized for work in Ala. AG's office

PRESS RELEASE

MONTGOMERY – Alabama Deputy Attorney General Corey L. Maze, who hails from Cherokee County, has been honored again this year by the National Association of Attorneys General with a "Best Brief Award."

The Award recognizes excellence in brief writing to the United States Supreme Court and is judged by a panel of leading members of the Supreme Court Bar.

This is Maze’s third consecutive Best Brief Award and marks the sixth time in the last seven years that the Alabama Attorney General's Office has been so honored. Attorneys from five other states were recognized this year by NAAG with Best Brief awards.

Attorney General Luther Strange joined the Association in praising Maze’s brief in the capital case of Maples v. Thomas.  Cory Maples murdered Stacy Terry and Barry Robinson III in July 1995.  At issue before the Supreme Court is whether a federal statute bars federal courts from hearing Maples’ appeal when his attorneys missed the mandatory deadline to file an appeal in Alabama state court, thereby preventing Alabama courts from ruling on Maples’ claims.  The Court will hear argument in the case later this year.

Maze served in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office first as an Assistant Attorney General prosecuting criminal trials and later handling appellate cases as Solicitor General.  Maze currently serves as a Deputy Attorney General, assigned by Attorney General Luther Strange this January to handle litigation on behalf of the State of Alabama regarding the massive 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“I am proud of the outstanding work performed by Corey Maze on behalf of the State of Alabama,” said Attorney General Strange. “The Office of Attorney General is honored by the continuing national recognition of his superior legal performances.  The people of Alabama are well-served as he now devotes his skill and expertise to protecting the interests and rights of our citizens in the oil spill litigation.”

Maze is a 2003 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and he joined the Attorney General’s Office that same year. A native of Centre, Maze is a 1996 graduate of Cherokee County High School and a 1999 graduate of Auburn University. His parents are Oneal and Sharon Maze of Centre.

Others in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office who have been honored in previous years with NAAG’s Best Brief Award are Assistant Attorneys General Misty Fairbanks and Jim Davis, former Solicitor General Kevin Newsom and former Assistant Attorney General Jack Park.
