Three nights of music to raise funds for TheatreCentre

STAFF REPORTS

CENTRE — If you're a little bit country, or a little bit rock and roll--or better yet, both--you’re going to like the entertainment opportunities the creative types at TheatreCentre have planned for this weekend.

Beginning Thursday and continuing through Saturday, the county's very own stage crew is staging a trio of musical impersonators at the Cherokee Arena on the Gadsden State campus in Centre.

“We were looking to do something different this time, for our fund raiser,” said TheatreCentre co-director Gary Davis. “For the past nine years, we've always done theater productions to raise money. This year we put our heads together and came up with this.”

Billed as “Stars Fell on TheatreCentre,” the performances begin Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. with Johnny Cash impersonator Jeffrey Hulsey.

“He's from Nashville,” Davis said. “I haven't seen his act but I have heard his music. He's a young guy, but he has definitely got that deep, Johnny Cash voice.”

Davis said once a few calls had been made to seek out a performer for the group's new fund-raising idea, they discovered an entire network of impersonators just waiting for a chance to perform.

“There's a little community of these people and they all know each other,” Davis said.

Pretty soon, a one-night occasion turned into a three night event. On Friday, Gatlinburg, Tenn.-based Matt Shaw will bring his Elvis Presely impersonation to the Cherokee Arena stage.

“I've seen the Elvis act, it's very good,” said Davis. “It's a combination of early and later songs. Of course, he comes with all the outfits. From a few rows back, you'd swear you were watching Elvis Presley.”

Saturday night's entertainment will be the “Tribute to Kenny and Dolly Show,” featuring Kenny Rogers look-alike Mark Hinds of Gatlinburg and Dolly Parton impersonator Melody Knighton of Atlanta.

“They'll sing several songs together, and they will do individual songs, as well,” Davis said.

Local singer Katie Hill will serve as the opening act for all three shows.

Tickets are $10 for each night's performance. TheatreCentre patrons get in free and should call Joy Perry at 256-927-7713 to schedule the night they would like to use their special seating.
