2006 Post Photo Patrol

TEN FINALISTS
Updated Dec. 18, 2006

Below are our ten finalists for the $1,000 first-place prize
in the 2006 Post Photo Patrol Contest. Also below are another four
photos that didn't quite meet all the necessary criteria for being
considered for the cash, but were pretty darned good, anyway.

The top three, cash winners will be announced on the front page of
the Dec. 25 issue of The Post (will be delivered on Dec. 23).

FINALIST!
The Carlton family of Sand Rock recently traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to go snow skiing. Above, the family (left to right: Stanley, Sarah, Beth, Betty, Hannah, and Michael) poses in front of the Teton Village Ski Resort.

Editor's note: The photographer zoomed out just far enough that we could get a feel for the atmosphere on the top of that mountain, and made us wish we were there.

FINALIST!
Sgt. David C. Eberhart, Dallas, Ga., holds a copy of The Post inside one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces in Baghdad, Iraq. Also in the picture is Kabob the sheep, who Eberhart reports was the guest of honor at dinner later in the evening.

Editor's note: We're proud to recognize our men and women who serve, especially when the photo is something as unique and interesting as this one.

FINALIST!
Noi (left) and Augie Berge, Acworth, Ga., pose with The Post at the Temple of Chaing Mai China, north of Bangkok, Thailand. The Berges, who have a summer home in Cedar Bluff, are entered to win the $1,000 first place prize.

Editor's note: One of those pictures we pulled out of the envelope, held up and said "Wow!" Those colors really took our breath away.

FINALIST!
Cait Kelly, Leesburg, took a few minutes as she skied behind her dad's boat on Weiss Lake to flip through her favorite weekly newspaper.

Editor's note: Someone was really thinking outside the box on this one. Folks, it's not always how far away you go or where you go. Sometimes it's how creatively you let us know you love to read The Post.

FINALIST!
Kathy, Amanda and Oliver Griffin recently attended Six Flag over Georgia and were clever enough to take along a copy of The Post for their ride down the log flume. The Griffins are from Sand Rock.

Editor's note: Here's another clever idea. They must have lugged their copy of The Post around the grounds of Six Flags for hours! That's dedication and we recognize and appreciate it.

FINALIST!
Andy Crow, who works at KTH-Leesburg Products, recently traveled to Leipzig Airport in Germany to meet, for the very first time, two brothers he has never seen in his 50 years on the planet. Crow explained that he was adopted from an orphanage in Germany when he was 11 months old, then moved with his new parents to the United States when he was 3 years old. After a his adoptive parents died in 2005, Crow said he began a five-month search of German adoption agencies to see if he could find his real mother. A short time later, he got some good and bad news. He was told his mother had passed away, but that he had two younger brothers. Here is is above (center) with his two brothers, who are around six years younger.

Editor's note: They say a picture tells a thousand words, but if you read our special article in the Sept. 11 edition, you already know this one is worth much, much more than that to Andy Crow.

FINALIST!
Olivia Godshall, Sarah Rachel Patton, Jay Thomas Patton, Mary Katherine Patton, Clay Coker (standing), Jordan Coker, Aubrey Traffanstedt, Caroline Grace Brannon, Cadence Smith Amison and John Thomas Brannon just knew they'd have a lousy time at the beach if they didn't pack along copies of their favorite weekly paper.

Editor's note: Clever, creative, and full of kids! What's not to like about this entry?

FINALIST!
Cara Parker, 7, Sand Rock, spent part of her summer vacation in South Miami Beach. Even up to her neck in fun and sunshine, she had time to take a look through a copy of The Post.

Editor's note: Another smartly done entry that obviously required a lot of work.

FINALIST!
Lindsey and Kyle Garmon, Centre, recently traveled to Grand Cayman Island and took a copy of The Post along with them on their tour of Stingray City.

Editor's note: We're always trying to get away from ideas that have won in the past, like scuba diving, but we thought the sting ray was different enough to warrant status as a finalist.

FINALIST!
Wilma Minnix, Centre, traveled to Alaska and drove a dog sled. Here, she is pictured with The Post and a sled dog from her team. In a lucky coincidence, the dog is also named Wilma.

Editor's note: We had several glacier-related entries this year, but Wilma Minnix did more than stand in front of one. She drove a dog sled! And one of the team's dogs was also named Wilma! Sure, she may have stumbled into the situation, but you have to admit this is one unique photo.
