2007 Post Photo Patrol Contest

Editor's Note: Deadline to enter the 2007 Post Photo Patrol Contest is Dec. 6 at noon. The winner will take home the first place prize of $1,000.

Martha and Tommy Coley, Ball Play community, traveled to Tennessee in December 2006 with their grandchildren, Adam Hanby (6) and Hannah Hanby (5). Above, they posed with The Post in front of the Aquarium of the Smokies.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene T. Mann, III, traveled to Barcelona, Spain in the early fall of 2005 and posed (above) with a copy of The Post in front of a flower garden at the University of Barcelona. The Manns spent time in the area visiting a girl (Merelo de Barbera) who was their exchange student at Cherokee County High School in the 1990s. (For anyone interested in how Merelo is doing these days, the Manns are proud to announce she is married and has a child.)

 

Emory Allyson Reedy, daughter of Sabrina and Johnny Reedy, Spring Garden, performed in the opening of the 80th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City in November. The star-to-be took time out from her dance routine to pose with The Post.

 

Brian Barkley (we think, the signature on back of the photo was hard to read) dropped off this photo of himself at the Johannesburg, South Africa airport in October 2006.

 

Vicki and Spencer Gilman, Cedar Bluff, traveled to the Dominican Republic in November 2006. Above, they stopped admiring the sites around the pool at the Gran Venata Resort long enough to pose with Cherokee County's No. 1 weekly paper.

 

SGT Brian Engle and SFC Verlon McGee both, former residents of Cherokee County, pose here with The Post in Al Asad, Iraq. Engle graduated Cherokee County High School in 1986 and McGee graduated from Sand Rock High School in 1985. Both are attached to the 226th Area Support Group out of Mobile. They are scheduled to return home in late 2007.

 

Thelma Odom, Centre, traveled to Spring Grove, Fla. to spend the Christmas holidays with Shane and Elisa Kraus.

 

Alton and Symphony Graves, Collinsville, traveled to Pasadena, Calif, in December 2006 and stopped by this sign along the annual Rose Bowl Parade route to have their picture taken with The Post.

 

Gail Wilson, Leesburg, traveled to Jackson, Wyoming in January 2007.

 

Jordan Hamilton traveled to Europe in January to attend the National FFA Organization's 2007 International Leadership Seminar for state officers. The photo above was taken in front of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain.

 

Leonard Abram, Cedar Bluff, recently traveled the Gulf of Mexico on a cruise ship. Here, he poses with The Post in the coastal city of Costa Maya, Mexico.

 

A youth group from Cedar Bluff First Baptist Church recently traveled to Winter Place Ski Resort in West Virginia. The three self-described "muscle men" are, left to right, Tony McGinnis, Luke Richardson and Evan McBurnett. The more appropriately attired ladies at right are Jana Nelson and Emily McBurnett.

 

Mary Parker recently traveled to Paradise Cove on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. She stopped the queen of the luau she was attending long enough to pose with The Post .

Private Joseph Pledger (center) poses with his parents, Harold and Sybil Pledger, Cedar Bluff, at the U.S. Marine Corps Training Center on Parris Island, S.C. The three stopped in front of the base's replica of the Iwo Jima monument for a picture with The Post.

 

Joey and Tammy Shaw had more than raw speed on their minds when they participated in a Marlboro hot lap session at Talladega Superspeedway on March 13. They also posed beside a former IROC Series Dodge Avenger with a copy of The Post and are now entered in the 2007 Post Photo Patrol Contest.

 

Dylan Cunningham, son of Chris and Holly Deal, recently visited the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library in California. Dylan posed with The Post inside the door of the very helicopter that whisked Nixon away from the White House on the day he resigned the presidency in August 1974. Dylan said wants to be president of the United States someday, too. (He assures us he is not a crook.)

 

The Cherokee County High School varsity softball team traveled to Gulf Shores to play in the Dolphin Invitational during spring break. Team members are, first row: Kara Beth Lockridge; second row (left to right): Kaley Bomian, Kara Bomian, Cayla Machleit, Kristen Abney; third row (left to right): Candace Blanchard, Lynden Curry, Deidra Davis, Laura Rochester, Malorie Rosser, Kaitlyn Griffith, Lauren Milsaps and Anissa Anglin. The Lady Warriors finished 4-3 and remembered to take along a copy of The Post.

 

Ella Clifton, Clavius Gresham & Justin Clifton, all of Leesburg, visited Thomas the Train in Calera. Their granddaddy Charles Clifton -- also from Leesburg -- took them on their annual trip and this year remembered to pack a copy of The Post.

 

 

 

 

Billy and Sarah Peek, along with friends Charles and Mary Foster, recently traveled around the Caribbean on a 12-day cruise to celebrate the Peeks' 50th wedding anniversary. They paused with a copy of The Post in front of Fort El Morro and Fort San Cristobal in Puerto Rico.

 

 

 

 

Angie Bennett, Andra Law, and Kathy Wadsworth, all of Centre, recently traveled to Las Vegas for a few nights on the town. During their visit, they took time out from the shows and the lights to pose with The Post in front of one of the city's most well-known flashing signs.

 

 

 

 

Lee Wheeler (left), Silver Creek, Ga., Lee Williams, Cedartown, Ga., and Johnny Angle, Piedmont, visited the Hon Company plant in Monterrey, Mexico March 25-31 and posed in front of their hotel with a copy of The Post.

 

 

 

 

Capt. Austin Levi Maness, the grandson of Alvie and Zula Maness, Cedar Bluff, took a few minutes from his routine of patrolling the streets of Ramadi, in Al Anbar province, Iraq, to take a look through a recent copy of The Post. Maness is in the United States Army.

 

 

 

 

Shirley and Joe Williams, Centre, recently visited Hawaii on a seven-day cruise. They posed (above) with a copy of The Post in the U.S.S. Arizona Museum at Pearl Harbor. The Williamses are standing in front of the names of the soldiers who died in the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

The Cherokee County Warriors finished second in the state tennis tournament, held May 2-3 in Montgomery. In between breaks in the competition, the Warriors paused for a team photo with The Post.

 

 

 

 

Jimmy, Lori, Victoria and Courtney Myrick traveled through the western Caribbean during their 2007 spring break holiday. During their five-day Mexican cruise, the Myricks visited the ports of Costa Maya and Cozumel. They posed with a copy of The Post at one of the ports and are now entered in the 2007 Photo Patrol Contest.

 

 

 

 

Shane and Jennifer Wright recently traveled to Hawaii, and had their photo taken with The Post at The Shores of Maui.

 

 

 

 

Rhonda and Johnny McPherson, Collinsville, recently traveled to Ireland as part of an Alfa Insurance trip. On May 1, the couple posed for a picture with The Post in front of Ross Castle, in the town of Killernay.

 

 

 

 

Ed and Marshelean Farmer, Centre, recently traveled to Calica and Cozumel, Mexico on a cruise ship. They took a few minutes away from their vacation to have their photo snapped with The Post.

We're not sure if he's reading it, but little Baron House took a break from playing on the beach in Destin, Fla. over the Memorial Day weekend to take a look at The Post. Baron is now entered in our Post Photo Patrol Contest.

 

 

 

 

Keith Johnson, Kathy Johnson, Michael Gable and Gail Gable, all of Cedartown, Ga., recently traveled to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and posed with The Post.

 

 

 

 

Edna and Jack Kisor, Gadsden, traveled to Arizona May 19-25. The two were born and raised in Cherokee County, they told us, adding that they had a wonderful vacation, which included a stop at the Grand Canyon.

Vicki Coheley, Centre, and Rhonda Benefield, Cedartown, Ga., recently traveled to Nashville, Tenn. and had their picture taken with The Post and the Gen. Jackson riverboat.

 

 

 

 

Sara Johnson and Jean Burns, both of Centre, recently took along a copy of The Post on their trip to Seattle, Alaska, and Canada. Mrs. Burns told us other passengers on one of the shuttles she rode during her trip were excited to read some news from Alabama.

 

 

 

 

Scott and Jennifer Mackey, Joe Brashier, Chloe Mackey, Sherian Brashier, Madeline Mackey, and Tony and Kerry Mackey traveled to New York City in December 2006 and remembered to take along a copy of The Post. The Brashiers reported that their granddaughters loved the Big Apple. Chloe said she plans to live there someday, and Madeline said NYC is home to the "tallest people in the world".

 

 

 

Emily, Aubrie and Lanie Williams traveled to Oak Island, N.C. with parents Marcus and Jennifer in mid-June. The girls are pictured in front of the Oak Island lighthouse on Caswell Beach, N.C.

 

Jarrett Floyd, son of Archie and Lisa Floyd, Piedmont, visited the U.S.S. Alabama with his fellow members of Cub Scout Troop 355 on July 7. The troop were on an overnight adventure to Mobile that included enjoying the Independence Day fireworks show, which they viewed from the deck of the battleship.

Paul and Susan Redgate, Centre, traveled to Alaska in June 2007. During their stay they took a day trip to Mt. McKinley and their chopper landed on Ruth Glacier. "Although clear and warm, the ice and snow remain 'crunchy'," Mr. Redgate wrote us.

 

Bayleigh Lambert recently visited Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and stayed at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground with her family. (Entry No. 50)

 

Rickey Ray (left) and Glenn Garmon pose with The Post in front of the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tenn. The two, along with David Morgan, took a 124-mile boat trip along the Tennessee River, from Stevenson to Chattanooga. The highlight of the trip was going through the Nickajack Lock and Dam, where they were raised and dropped 42 feet as they navigated the river.

Barbara Higginbotham and Samantha Rollins, both from Sand Rock, visited Huntsville Space and Rocket Center recently and posed with a copy of The Post in front of the space shuttle Pathfinder. The girls were at the NASA facility at the invitation of Gov. Bob Riley, who chose them to attend a camp where they learned about homeland security.

Teresa and David Crabtree, Cedar Bluff, recently traveled with their family to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and walked the wooded trails near Gatlinburg.

 

 

 

 

Shirley Burns, Centre, traveled to Millington, Tenn. in September to see the Navy's Blue Angels perform. It was a special event for Burns, because her cousin Anthony Walley is flying F-18 No. 2.

 

 

 

 

Allison Rogers, a 5th grade student at Centre Elementary, received a Christmas present from her aunt to travel anywhere in the lower 48 states. Allison chose San Diego because of its world-famous zoo. She's pictured here with a copy of The Post during a hot-air balloon ride over San Diego.

 

 

 

 

Last year's $1,000 grand prize co-winner, Terry Kelly, sent us this picture near his dock in the Yellow Creek area of Weiss Lake. He wrote us that he'd love to send in another picture of his daughter wakeboarding but there's no lake to do it in.

 

 

 

 

Chris Brown, Centre, recently completed a 2,600 mi. round-trip of the country that included stops in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Here, Brown poses with a copy of The Post with the American and Horseshoe sections of Niagra Falls in the background.

 

 

 

 

Caitlin, Mikenzie, Camryn and Cade Gossett recently traveled with their families to the Dominican Republic. They found a palm tree and a nice stretch of beach, and posed with a copy of The Post.

 

 

 

 

If you live or work in Centre, you may recognize the slightly distorted -- and slightly funnier-looking than usual -- face of UPS delivery man Ronnie Ivey as he falls like a pregnant brick from 13,000 feet high in the skies over northern California. Ronnie was recently in the Golden State visiting his son Adam, who is stationed there in the U.S. Air Force. Adam talked his old man into hopping out the door of a perfectly good airplane with a professional skydiver strapped to his back and Ronnie said he couldn't think of anything better to cling to on the way down than a copy of The Post.

 

 

 

 

Shirley Granger, who works at KLP in Leesburg as a coordinator, recently visited Mexico and remembered to pack a copy of The Post.

 

 

 

 

Gail Rice, Palmetto, Fla., posed with a copy of The Post in front of the gravesite of Gen. Stonewall Jackson in Lexington, Va. Her husband's family settled near Lexington in the 1700s, but they'll both be moving to Cedar Bluff sometime soon.

 

 

 

 

Sydni Puckett, Seth Guyton and Summer Guyton traveled to Panama City Beach, Fla. and visited Shell Island during their summer vacation.

Willene Highfield and Karen and Tony Stinson, all of McCords Crossroads community, traveled to Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada to visit with friends and pose with The Post. While in Canada, the trio also visited Calgary, Banff, Columbia Icefields and Canmore in Alberta.

 

 

 

 

Billy Godfrey, Alexis community, recently attended a U.S. Marine Corps reunion in Parris Island, S.C. and posed with a copy of The Post in front of the island's replica of the Washington, D.C. Marine memorial.

 

 

 

 

Jack and Jamie Stargell visited Jack's sister, who lives in Ft. Worth, Texas. The couple posed with a copy of The Post at the Dallas-Ft. Worth stockyard jail.

 

 

 

 

Marchant Starr, Cedar Bluff, traveled to New York City with her mother, Sheila Starr, and godmother, Julie Hawkins, to celebrate her 13th birthday. Marchant posed with The Post on the ferry as it arrived at the Statue of Liberty.

Centre Middle School teachers Lee Bailey and Stephanie West, along with CMS Principal Renee Williams, had their picture taken at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, with the famous "space cow."

 

 

 

 

Sgt. Samuel Hancock, Piedmont, is shown with The Post in the mountains of Afghanistan, just across the Pakistan border. The picture was taken at night because the flash from the camera would have made him a target because he is in such a dangerous area. The moon is shown in the background. Hancock said he read his copy of The Post about 10 times. He said everyone should write and pray for our soldiers.
