Warriors receive votes in week one poll; Piedmont still No. 2

By KURT DURYEA

The Alabama Sports Writers Association issued their first regular season poll of the 2011 season today.

Collinsville (1-0) moved up one spot to sixth in Class 1A as they shut out Coosa Christian 49-0.  Cedar Bluff (0-1) fell three positions and finished tied with Maplesville at eighth. The Tigers were edged by 4A Cherokee County last Thursday, 28-23.  Friday night’s 1A Region 7 contests include Collinsville at Spring Garden (0-1), Cedar Bluff hosting Woodville (0-1), and Gaston (0-1) entertaining Gaylesville (0-1).

Piedmont (1-0, 1-0) remained at No. 2 among the Class 3A elite grouping as they whitewashed Hokes Bluff 21-0 in a Region 6 contest. The Bulldogs will unveil the renovated Field of Champions on Friday night against Susan Moore (0-1, 0-1).  Leeds remained in the 3A top spot while Madison Academy and Plainview exited the top 10 after week one losses.

A solid 34-7 win by Fyffe (1-0,1-0) over Westbrook Christian in 2A Region 6, combined with losses by five of the six top-ranked teams in the Class 2A pre-season poll pushed the Red Devils to No. 3 overall.

Cherokee County (1-0) received top 10 consideration, as did their upcoming opponent Fairview (1-0).  The Warriors will be on the road to face the Aggies this week in an attempt to gain their first Region 7 win of the season.

Fort Payne (1-0) jumped into the rankings at No. 10 after hanging just outside in the pre-season poll release. The Wildcats steamrolled Springville 43-12 and have their sights set on extending their streak of consecutive playoff appearances going back to 2006. The Wildcats will be tested this week by Etowah (1-0).  The Blue Devils drew attention in the 5A polling circles again this week.

In Class 6A, Gadsden City (1-0) is just shy of joining select company. The Titans will have a shot to join the party if they can upset Class 6A No. 9 Oxford (1-0) on the road.   Last week, a Paul Gilley extra point was the difference for Gadsden City as the Titans defeated Tuscaloosa County 7-6.
