ROC basketball playoffs begin this week

CENTRE – The undefeated Good Guys will be looking to defend their Open League Championship at the ROC Tuesday night against the Green Machine (8-3).


The Good Guys cracked the century mark again Thursday, eliminating Collinsville 104-82. Gadsden State product Jay Whorton dropped in 41 points. Cardinal teammate Andrew Morris, of Spring Garden, added 29. Former Jacksonville State guard Will Ginn had 26 for the Good Guys.

In the other Open League semifinal, the Green Machine squeezed out a 72-70 win. Chai Cowser led the way with 16, Josh Fife had 15, Boyce Baker and Caleb Carpenter had 11 each, and Johnny Amison added 10.

In the Church League Pine Grove (9-1) and Union Grove (9-1) each claimed a share of the regular season title. Pine Grove defeated Centre First Baptist, 64-52. Boyce Baker would bag 24 points to go with Keddrick Barrett's 16 and Ryan Rainer's 14 for Pine Grove. Donnie Lowe had 16 for First Baptist, while Chad Hopper and Dalton Colbert had 15 apiece.

Union Grove was challenged by Providence (3-7) before securing their title claim with a 66-59 win. Cliff Highfield had a couple of crowd-pleasing slams while leading his team with 24 points.

Centre First Methodist captured the last playoff seed with a 74-18 drubbing of Grace Pointe (0-10). The FUMC trio of Trevor Perry (24), Wes Neyman (24) and Mark Johnson (20) provided most of the firepower.

Church League semifinals will be played May 17 and the championship game will tip-off Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. Two-seeded Union Grove will tip off against Centre First Baptist at 7:15 p.m., followed by Pine Grove and number four FUMC at 8:15 p.m.

All games are played at the Centre First Baptist Recreation Outreach Center (ROC) and are open to the public.
