Sand Rock dominates young Ohatchee team, 33-6

By Scott Wright

RUSSELL JACOWAY STADIUM — “That as probably, from end-to-end, one of the most complete games we have played all season,” Sand Rock coach Russell Jacoway said after his Wildcats dominated the Ohatchee Indians 33-6 here Friday night.

Jacoway had just watched his recently revamped offense rack up over 260 yards, including 185 yards on the ground on 40 attempts.

Sand Rock's defense also shut down the Indians until the game's closing minutes, and the special teams scored the early touchdown that broke the game open.

Ohatchee coach Jason Howard admitted his young team was outmatched in all three phases.

“We're learning, but we're young and we're weak in the weight room,” said Howard, who's in his first year after coming over from Spring Garden. “We've got three seniors, five juniors, and the rest of them are freshmen and sophomores. Hopefully, in a year or two, we'll be ready to compete -- and I believe we will.”

Sand Rock's strength showed on the opening series, an eight-minute, 14-play drive that ended with Dylan Langley's one-yard plunge. Ohatchee blocked the point-after, and the Wildcats led 6-0.

After forcing an Ohatchee punt, Sand Rock (4-4, 3-4) drove down the field again. Cody Beck's nine-yard pass to Brannon Burt on a slant route made the score 12-0 early in the second quarter. The two-point conversion failed.

Beck, a senior, was moved to quarterback three weeks ago to free up Burt, Sand Rock's main offensive threat. Beck finished the night 6-for-7 for 89 yards and two scores – both to Burt.

“Cody has been really stable, a good leader,” Jacoway said after the game. “He played the position when he was younger, but he's playing it right now better than he ever has.”

Jacoway said the move had been a benefit for Burt, as well.

"Since we’ve gotten him back out wide where he’s comfortable, we’ve run him some, we throw him the football on some quick stuff, we’re able to put the ball in his hands in the open field," Jacoway said. "He’s made a lot of plays for us the last three weeks.

The big play Howard later said he was hoping to avoid came after another Ohatchee drive faltered just past midfield. Burt cradled the punt at his own 15, bolted down the left sideline, and spun out of a would-be tackler's arms near the goal line. The 85-yard play made the score 20-0, invigorating the crowd and deflating the Indians.

“That's been the thing with us all year,” Howard said. “We play our butts off for about a quarter and a half, then we have a couple of breakdowns. They did a great job of capitalizing on our mistakes.”

Beck and Burt hooked again from 34 yards out with 2:23 left in the half to increase the halftime lead to 26-0.

Senior running back Brian Tosh extended the Wildcats' lead to 33-0 on a 37-yard run midway through the third quarter.

In the closing minutes, the Indians were able to put together a scoring drive. Freshman Tristan Allen scored from the 10 with under a minute remaining to make the final score 33-6.

Sand Rock travels to Fyffe (7-1, 6-1) Friday night for a game that will largely determine their fate in the postseason.

“Winning the game next week will virtually put us in the playoffs,” Jacoway said. “If we lose it, it doesn't mean we're out of the playoffs, but it makes it tough.”
