Johnson: Arrested teacher no longer works for BOE

STAFF REPORTS

CENTRE — Superintendent of Schools Brian Johnson today told The Post a teacher arrested last weekend for drug possession is no longer an employee of the Cherokee County Board of Education.

Johnson said Centre Elementary teacher Stephanie Maroney turned in her resignation at the March 22 meeting of the Board of Education in Centre.

Asked whether she was fired or allowed to resign, Johnson indicated the latter.

“The Board accepted her resignation,” he said. “It was going to be one or the other, and it was faster that way.”

Maroney, 36, and her husband, Adam Maroney, 35, were arrested Friday night at their home on County Road 44 by Leesburg police officers and members of the county’s narcotics unit.

Both were charged with several drug related offenses, including possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Adam Maroney was also charged with resisting arrest and tampering with physical evidence.

Asked if the Board of Education might consider beginning random drug testing of teachers in the future, Johnson said state law currently prohibits it.

“Only employees who are hired to transport students, such as bus drivers, can be subjected to drug testing,” he said.
