CENTRE — Cherokee County Hall of Fame selection committee spokesman Tommy Moon recently released the three names that will comprise the Class of 2012.  Moon made the announcement live on WEIS Radio at halftime of last week’s basketball game between Cherokee County and Alexandria.

Sand Rock’s Lance Mackey, Harry Tucker of Cedar Bluff and Ronald Rooks enter the Hall of Fame on June 9. Rooks represents Hatcher and Cherokee County high schools.

Mackey quarterbacked the Wildcat football team to an undefeated season in 1985, culminating with a 14-6 victory over Repton in the Class 1A championship game. Mackey was an all-state first team selection at quarterback that season as well as being honored as the 1A Player of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Harry Tucker was an end for Cedar Bluff while his twin brother, Larry, quarterbacked the offense under legendary Head Coach L.D. Bruce.  The Tigers 1959 football team recorded a 10-0 mark.  The stout defense posted seven shutouts during the season and never yielded more than a single touchdown. Cedar Bluff was awarded the class 1A state championship by the Birmingham News. Harry was named to the all-state first team at the end his senior season. Tucker transitioned from the gridiron to the gymnasium, where he average 28 points per game and led the Tigers to county and district titles in basketball. With the district title Cedar Bluff became the Cherokee County’s first-ever entry into state tournament play.

Ronald Rooks garnered Class 3A all-state honors as part of the Warriors 1969 basketball team that ran off 29 straight victories before falling to Austin in the state finals.   A multisport athlete, Rooks went on to St. Bernard College where he earned made the Southern States All-Conference Track and Field Team in 1970.

The induction ceremony will be held at Gadsden State in Centre.  Ticket details will be released in the weeks ahead.
