Spring Garden girls win Class 1A state title

BIRMINGHAM (AP) — Senior Paige Anderson had 31 points to help Spring Garden beat McIntosh 61-44 and snag the school's fourth Class 1A girls state basketball title on Wednesday.

The Panthers (36-0) had their winningest season in school history. McIntosh (29-1) won the state championship in 2006 and 2007 and was undefeated heading into the final game.

Spring Garden snapped a 64-game McIntosh winning streak that ranks second only to Athens' 69 wins from 2001-2003.

Bridget Parris had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers, and Hannah Hutcheson had 12 points, including 8-of-8 free throws.

The Demons' Brittany Simmons had 19 points. Jakia Reed had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Velencia Reed added 10 more points.

Named to the All-Tourney team were MVP Paige Anderson of Spring Garden; Bernisha Harris, R.A. Hubbard; Brittany Simmons, McIntosh; Bridget Parris, Spring Garden; Jakia Reed, McIntosh; and Hannah Hutcheson, Spring Garden.

Spring Garden won its first girls' state title in 1987.
