A group of interested local citizens has formed the Cherokee County Tennis Association.

The purpose of the organization is to encourage and promote tennis in Cherokee County. The Summer Classic Tennis Tournament will be held June 25-27 at the Centre courts. There will be divisions for men, women, and children. Deadline for entry is June 24.

The association is also assisting with the USTA team tennis program. The association will also help put on the annual Cherokee County High School Tennis Camp, scheduled for the end of July, as well Quick Start tennis.

Both programs are designed for young beginners. USTA representative Kevin Theos recently visited the group to discuss tennis court upgrades, grants and tournament and league play.

The group's next meeting is a Dutch treat dinner July 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Lanny's restaurant in Centre.

To join CCTA or find out more about the tournament, send email jbates@tds.net  or bakerls@tds.net or call Mark Baker at 256-523-1404 .

Tournament entry fee is $17 for single members ($25 for non-members), and $10 per players for doubles ($13 for non-members). Annual membership fee for the CCTA is $15 ($25 for a family).
