TheatreCentre announces 2012-13 schedule

By SCOTT WRIGHT

CENTRE — The multi-talented troupe at TheatreCentre is gearing up for another great season onstage, Co-director Gary Davis assured us earlier this month.

“We have a committee that looks over a list of shows and makes recommendations,” Davis said. “Then we vote on those that we really want to do.”

Davis said the 2012-13 season begins in December with “It's a Wonderful Life.” In March 2013 comes “On Golden Pond.” Later on next year, the group will put on the musical “They Chose Me.”

Davis said he and everyone at TheatreCentre is excited to show off their interpretation of the classic Christmas tale made immortal on the silver screen by the late Jimmy Stewart.

“Of course 'It's a Wonderful Life' is one of the great, classic movies that everybody looks to and remembers,” Davis said. “It has a great tug-at-your-heart story.”

Davis said the casting call will be for around 25 characters when it is placed sometime toward the end of next month. He also pointed out that the story was originally a stage play.

“Most of your really good movies from the 1940s through the early 1970s were stage plays first,” Davis said. “Now, they’re books.”

Davis said the cast for “On Golden Pond” will be considerably smaller.

“I think there are only five in the cast,” Davis said. “And it's a great story, a really great show.”

The summer 2013 production is a musical about adoption, Davis said.

Davis said the rights for first-rate stage productions can be expensive.

“The most we have paid is about $3,500, and that was just for the rights,” Davis said. “They'll send us a set of scripts, any music that goes with the show. That's why the most expensive are typically the musicals.”

In order to generate funds to pay for buying rights, creating backgrounds, purchasing props and other production costs, TheatreCentre is once again offering patron packages. The bronze level costs $100; silver is $250; and gold is $500. All three come with seats to the entire 2012-13 season of performances.
