Warriors' Wehunt headed to Ohatchee

By KURT DURYEA

CENTRE — The Cherokee County coaching carousel continues to turn. Last week Spring Garden welcomed back a former head coach. This week, Cherokee County High School has lost a top assistant.

Warrior defensive coordinator Nathan Wehunt will drop off his black and gold to don the red and white of the Ohatchee Indians. Wehunt becomes the 26th head coach in school history. Ironically, Wehunt takes over for Jason Howard, who left his alma mater to return to Spring Garden

Wehunt’s voice was strained from the whirlwind of events since the Calhoun County Board of Education officially approved his hiring.

“I’ve had meetings with staff,” Wehunt said. “I’ve talked with players, boosters, parents, and administration.  It’s a great community. I am excited to get started.”

Wehunt will get his first taste of Calhoun County competition when the Indians participate in the Pigskin Roundup Spring Jam Thursday, May 17 against Weaver. The jamboree will be held at JSU.

Ohatchee’s season starts and finishes on the road with non-region games. On August 30 Ohatchee kicks off the season at White Plains. The Indians’ finale is Nov. 2 at Gaylesville. Sandwiched in between will be seven Class 2A Region six games, against Walter Wellborn, Pleasant Valley, Fultondale, Woodland, Ranburne, Vincent and Victory Christian.  The Indians will also host Westbrook Christian in week five.
