Wright behind Fagan, ahead of Sanford after week one

By KURT DURYEA

Cherokee County Sports Editor Shannon Fagan and an anonymous 6th grader tied for week one honors in the popular “Are You Smarter Than a 6th Grader?” segment of last week’s WEIS Radio End Zone show.  The twosome, along with Scott Wright, managing editor of The Post, and WEIS Sports Analyst Nolen Sanford, made their picks live on the air last Thursday from the Gridiron restaurant in Centre.

The three local sports "celebrities" will pick games involving SEC teams and Jacksonville State every week. Fagan and the mystery 6th grader picked nine winners against two losers. Wright finished 8-3, Sanford 7-4. All experts missed on the Auburn’s 41-34 win over Mississippi State and JSU’s 38-17 loss to UT-Chattanooga. Wright and Sanford came up short on the Vanderbilt game, picking the losing Huskies. Sanford’s fourth slip came when he missed predicting Tennessee's 45-23 pounding of Cincinnati.

To hear the “experts” pick against our anonymous 6th grader live at the Gridiron, tune into the WEIS Radio End Zone show Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on 990 AM, or live via our Internet stream. The identity of our anonymous 6th grader will be revealed at the end of the year.

This wee'ks “Blast from the Past” interview will featuere legendary Cherokee County Warrior football coach Bobby Joe Johnson and All-State honoree B.T. Law as they talk about the 1967 and '68 Warriors, who compiled a two-year record of 17-2-1.

The End Zone show also features the Impact Players of the Week segment, where Sanford and co-host Kurt Duryea reveal area coaches’ picks of the players who had outstanding performances the previous week on offense, defense and special teams.

Tune in to the broadcast or come on in to the Gridiron during the show, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Out-of-town listeners can hear the live stream online at www.weis990am.com.
