The Post wins 5 awards from Alabama Press Association

STAFF REPORTS

DESTIN, Fla. — Winners on the Alabama Press Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest were announced June 20-22 during the group's summer convention in Florida.

As it turns out, “Cherokee County's No. 1 Weekly” had a wonderful weekend in the sun.

This year marked the first time the APA has opened the contest to community papers such as The Post. The weekly paper, first printed as a shopper in 1985 and published in Centre every Monday, was up for awards in six categories and won five.

Seventy-two newspapers submitted 2,668 entries. The Kentucky Press Association judged the entries.

The Post won second place for General Excellence in its division. The comprehensive award was based on a host of criteria in several different areas and used a combined point total from all other entry categories. Considerations included overall design, page layout, public service, online presence and advertising creativity.

The Post also received second-place recognition in the state for its weekly editorial page, which regularly features guest editorial columns dealing with local, state and national politics; letters from readers and excerpts from editorials around the country; a political cartoon; and a quote of the week, usually from a newsmaker in state or national politics.

Humorist Tim Sanders, whose weekly “Road Apples” column has been a staple in The Post since the 1980s, won second place in the Best Humorous Column category for last year's “How to Bathe a Cat.”

Sanders has also won numerous writing awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for his humor columns, including in 2006, 2008 and 2012.

The Post won second place in the Best Editorial Column or Commentary category for Managing Editor Scott Wright's column titled “Most in GOP can't admit they were wrong on immigration.” Wright won first place for his series of columns on the Cherokee County Commission's years-long efforts to pass a sewage ordinance to help clean up Weiss Lake.

The Post was purchased by Model Tees Screen Printing owner David Crawford, Jr. in 1997. Wright has been with the paper since Crawford became the publisher. Production Manager Tina Arnold has been with The Post since 2008. Production Assistant Tanya Smith joined the staff in 2012.

The Post distributes 17,500 copies to over 130 locations throughout northeast Alabama and northwest Georgia every week. The Post focuses its editorial coverage on local and state news, community and school events, Weiss Lake, football in the fall, and offers free classified listings to readers.
