Gaylesville gallops past Spring Garden, improves to 2-0

SPRING GARDEN — The Gaylesville Trojans ran their season record to 2-0 Friday night with a 35-28 win over Spring Garden. The Trojans once again rode the back of freshman Gage Davis, who powered his way through the Panther defense en route to 211 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Davis also caught a pass for 35 yards.

Last week, he ran for 225 yards in a win over Cedar Bluff.

The Trojans scored first on a 49-yard run by Davis on the team's opening possession. Spring Garden answered with a six-minute drive that was capped off by a Kyle Reese 24-yard scamper. The score was 7-6 Gaylesville after a missed extra point try. Reese finished with 79 yards rushing on the night and caught two passes for 50 yards.

Two minutes later Davis scored his second touchdown of the night on a 27-yard run early in the second quarter. Spring Garden answered again, this time on a 46-yard run by Matt Mullinax. Freshman quarterback Ben Ivey ran the two-point conversion in to tie the game at 14-14.

With seconds remaining in the half, Mullinax scored again from 8 yards out to up the Spring Garden lead to 21-14.

The second half started like the first, with Davis rushing for another score that tied the game at 21-21. Spring Garden's final score gave them a 28-21 lead with 5:43 left in the third.

Gaylesville then reeled off 14 unanswered points, first on a 49-yard run by Davis. Dylan Mitchell ran 58 yards for the Trojans’ final score.

Spring Garden (0-2, 0-1) missed on a final chance to tie the game when a fourth-down pass fell incomplete with two minutes remaining.
